World of Warcraft did away with loot with random stats long ago. Nowadays it’s uncool for video games to have RPG rules systems where you can mess up. Gotta love an RPG where you move the spell target about inch-by-inch to try to hit the most enemies and least friendlies. In some ways, I wish there was more of it – though I appreciate that is an unfair request given that so many of the encounters appear to have been carefully crafted. It’s not a game where you’ll be often wondering “why did that attack not work?” or “why have I lost 4 points of Strength?” The combat mechanics are fairly simple and well-communicated. And that’s ignoring the bosses who are generally more elaborate still. Bandits that attack from all sides, zombies that heal from poison, robotic roosters that “bleed” flammable oil. Many encounters feature something unusual to force you to think differently. (That said I’d suggest always taking at least a smattering of elemental magic in any party.)Ĭombat in D:OS is a very cerebral and challenging affair (especially on tactician mode). And while it is a sizable factor in combat it is not the only factor by a long shot. Environmental interaction like this is a gimmick. It sounded like a shallow gimmick for a shallow system and put me off. Shock a puddle with magical lightning and everyone in it would be zapped. It’s a timely review, what with Divinity: Original Sin 2 released on Early Access. There are many Divinity games but I think it’s fair to say that this is first in the series to earn massive acclaim. This is a turn-based RPG – a genre that was once fairly common but nowadays is growing quite rare.
